Body Care After Delivery
Physical Changes After Delivery
After giving birth, your body will go through a number of physical changes. These changes can include:
- Vaginal bleeding (lochia)
- Breast engorgement
- Hemorrhoids
- Constipation
- Urinary incontinence
- Diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles)
These changes are all normal and will typically resolve within a few weeks or months. However, it is important to be aware of these changes and to take care of yourself during this time.
Personal Hygiene
Good personal hygiene is important after delivery to prevent infection and promote healing. Here are some tips for maintaining good personal hygiene:
- Change your pads or tampons frequently, especially if you are bleeding heavily.

- Take a shower or bath daily.
- Use a mild soap and avoid harsh scrubs or chemicals.
- Pat yourself dry with a clean towel.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing made from natural fibers, such as cotton.
Perineal Care
The perineum is the area between the vagina and the anus. It is important to take care of the perineum after delivery to prevent infection and promote healing.
- Rinse the perineum with warm water after each bowel movement or urination.
- Apply a cold compress to the perineum to help reduce swelling and pain.
- Take a sitz bath (a shallow bath filled with warm water) for 15-20 minutes several times a day.
- Use a squirt bottle filled with warm water to rinse the perineum after using the toilet.
Breast Care
If you are breastfeeding, it is important to take care of your breasts to prevent infection and promote milk production. Here are some tips for breast care:
- Wear a supportive bra that fits well.
- Change your bra pads frequently, especially if they become wet.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after touching your breasts.
- Breastfeed frequently, at least 8-12 times a day.
- Avoid using harsh soaps or chemicals on your breasts.
- Apply a cold compress to your breasts to help reduce engorgement and pain.
Diet and Exercise
Eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise can help you to recover from childbirth and regain your strength and energy. Here are some tips for diet and exercise after delivery:
- Eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
- Drink plenty of fluids, especially water.
- Start exercising gradually, as soon as you feel up to it.
- Listen to your body and rest when you need to.
Emotional Health
It is also important to take care of your emotional health after delivery. Childbirth can be a physically and emotionally challenging experience. Here are some tips for taking care of your emotional health:
- Talk to your partner, family, and friends about your feelings.
- Join a support group for new mothers.
- See a therapist if you are struggling with postpartum depression or anxiety.
Remember that it takes time to recover from childbirth. Be patient with yourself and take care of yourself both physically and emotionally.
