How to Body Filler a Car
Materials You’ll Need
- Body filler
- Hardener
- Spreader
- Sandpaper (various grits)
- Primer
- Paint
Instructions
1. Prepare the Surface
The first step is to prepare the surface of the car that you will be filling. This means cleaning it thoroughly with soap and water, then sanding it with a coarse grit sandpaper to remove any rust or debris. Once the surface is clean and sanded, apply a thin coat of primer to help the body filler adhere.
2. Mix the Body Filler
Body filler is a two-part mixture, so you will need to mix it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Typically, you will mix one part body filler to one part hardener. Once the body filler is mixed, you will have about 10 minutes to work with it before it starts to set.
3. Apply the Body Filler
Use a spreader to apply the body filler to the surface of the car. Spread the body filler evenly, and work it into any holes or dents. Once the body filler is applied, you will need to let it set for the amount of time specified in the manufacturer’s instructions.
4. Sand the Body Filler
Once the body filler is set, you will need to sand it smooth. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper to remove any excess body filler, then gradually switch to finer grits until the surface is smooth. Be sure to wear a dust mask while sanding.
5. Primer and Paint
Once the body filler is sanded, you will need to apply a coat of primer. Primer helps to protect the body filler from moisture and provides a smooth surface for the paint. Once the primer is dry, you can apply the paint. Allow the paint to dry completely before driving the car.
Tips
- Use a heat gun to warm the body filler before applying it. This will make it easier to spread and work with.
- If you are filling a large hole or dent, apply the body filler in layers. Allow each layer to set before applying the next.
- Be patient when sanding the body filler. It is important to sand the surface smooth to ensure a good finish.
- Wear a dust mask when sanding to avoid inhaling dust particles.
