Materials You’ll Need
- New transmission oil
- Transmission oil filter
- Drain pan
- Funnel
- Wrench
- Gloves
Safety Precautions
- Park your car on a level surface.
- Allow the engine to cool down completely before starting.
- Wear gloves to protect your hands.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather Your Materials
Make sure you have all of the materials you need before you start. It’s also a good idea to review the owner’s manual for your specific car model to see if there are any special instructions.
2. Locate the Transmission Pan
The transmission pan is usually located on the bottom of the transmission. It is a metal pan that is held in place by bolts.
3. Drain the Old Fluid
Place the drain pan under the transmission pan. Loosen the bolts that hold the pan in place and allow the old fluid to drain into the pan. Be careful not to spill any fluid on yourself or the ground.
4. Replace the Transmission Filter
Once the old fluid has drained, remove the old transmission filter. Install the new filter in its place.
5. Replace the Transmission Pan
Retighten the bolts that hold the transmission pan in place. Make sure the pan is tight enough to prevent leaks, but not so tight that you strip the bolts.
6. Add New Fluid
Use a funnel to add new transmission fluid to the transmission. The amount of fluid you need to add will vary depending on your car model. Check the owner’s manual for the specific amount.
7. Check the Fluid Level
Once you have added the new fluid, start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Then, shift the transmission through all of the gears. Check the fluid level again and add more fluid if necessary.
