How to Change Gear in Automatic Transmission Car
Step 1: Familiarize Yourself with the Gear Selector
The gear selector in an automatic transmission car is usually located on the center console. It typically has a lever or knob that you move to select the desired gear. The most common gear positions are:
- Park (P): This is used when the car is stationary and parked.
- Reverse (R): This is used to move the car backward.
- Neutral (N): This is used when the car is idling or coasting.
- Drive (D): This is the main driving gear and is used for most driving conditions.
- Overdrive (O/D): This is used to improve fuel economy at highway speeds.
Step 2: Start the Engine
Before you can change gear, you need to start the engine. To do this, insert the key into the ignition and turn it clockwise. Once the engine is running, you can move the gear selector to the desired gear.
Step 3: Select the Desired Gear
To select the desired gear, simply move the gear selector to the corresponding position. For example, to shift into drive, move the selector to the “D” position. To shift into reverse, move the selector to the “R” position.
Step 4: Accelerate and Decelerate
Once you have selected the desired gear, you can accelerate and decelerate by using the gas pedal and brake pedal. To accelerate, press the gas pedal. To decelerate, press the brake pedal.
Step 5: Stop the Engine
When you are finished driving, you need to stop the engine. To do this, simply shift the gear selector to the “P” position and turn the key in the ignition counterclockwise. Once the engine is off, you can remove the key from the ignition.
Tips
- Always come to a complete stop before shifting into reverse.
- Never shift into neutral while driving at highway speeds.
- If you are having trouble shifting gears, consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual or a qualified mechanic.
