How to Paint Your Own RC Car Body
Materials You’ll Need
- RC car body
- Automotive paint
- Primer
- Clear coat
- Sandpaper (various grits)
- Masking tape
- Paintbrushes
- Airbrush (optional)
Step 1: Prepare the Body
The first step is to prepare the body for painting. This involves sanding the surface to remove any imperfections, and then applying a primer to help the paint adhere better.
To sand the body, start with a coarse grit sandpaper (around 100 grit). Sand in a circular motion, applying even pressure. Once the body is smooth, switch to a finer grit sandpaper (around 220 grit) and sand again. Finally, use a very fine grit sandpaper (around 400 grit) to smooth the surface.
Once the body is sanded, it’s time to apply the primer. Primer is a type of paint that helps the topcoat adhere better to the surface. Apply the primer in thin, even coats, and allow it to dry completely before sanding it with a fine grit sandpaper (around 400 grit).
Step 2: Mask the Body
Once the body is primed, it’s time to mask off any areas that you don’t want to paint. This includes the windows, lights, and any other areas that you want to keep the original color.
To mask the body, use masking tape. Tear off a piece of masking tape and apply it to the area you want to mask off. Press down firmly to ensure that the tape adheres to the surface. Repeat this process until all of the areas you want to mask off are covered.
Step 3: Apply the Paint
Now it’s time to apply the paint. You can use either an airbrush or a paintbrush to apply the paint. If you’re using an airbrush, dilute the paint with a little bit of thinner. If you’re using a paintbrush, apply the paint in thin, even coats.
Allow each coat of paint to dry completely before applying the next coat. This will help to prevent the paint from running or dripping.
Step 4: Clear Coat the Body
Once you’re satisfied with the paint job, it’s time to apply a clear coat. Clear coat is a type of paint that protects the paint from scratches and fading. Apply the clear coat in thin, even coats, and allow it to dry completely before handling the body.
Step 5: Remove the Masking Tape
Once the clear coat is dry, it’s time to remove the masking tape. Carefully peel off the masking tape, and be careful not to damage the paint.
