How to Pour Transmission Fluid into Car
Materials You’ll Need
- Transmission fluid
- Funnel
- Rag
Safety Precautions
- Park your car on a level surface.
- Set the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool down.
- Wear gloves to protect your hands from hot fluid.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Locate the Transmission Dipstick
The transmission dipstick is usually located near the engine. It is usually red or yellow and has a handle.
2. Pull Out the Dipstick and Check the Fluid Level
Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag. Reinsert the dipstick all the way into the transmission. Pull it out again and check the fluid level. The fluid level should be between the “min” and “max” marks on the dipstick.
3. Add Transmission Fluid if Necessary
If the fluid level is low, add transmission fluid through the dipstick tube using a funnel. Add fluid slowly and check the level frequently to avoid overfilling.
4. Wipe Off the Dipstick and Reinsert It
Once the fluid level is correct, wipe off the dipstick with a rag and reinsert it all the way into the transmission.
Tips
- Use the correct type of transmission fluid for your car.
- Check the transmission fluid level regularly, especially if you are experiencing transmission problems.
- If you are not comfortable pouring transmission fluid into your car yourself, you can take it to a mechanic to have it done.
