How to Repair Deep Scratches on Car Body
Materials you will need:
- Sandpaper (120-grit, 220-grit, and 400-grit)
- Rubbing compound
- Scratch filler
- Primer
- Automotive paint
- Clear coat
- Wax
Instructions:
1. Clean the scratched area
Start by cleaning the scratched area with soap and water to remove any dirt or debris. Allow the area to dry completely before proceeding.
2. Sand the scratched area
Using 120-grit sandpaper, sand the scratched area in a circular motion. Be sure to sand the area around the scratch as well, to create a smooth transition. Once the scratch is sanded down, switch to 220-grit sandpaper and sand the area again, followed by 400-grit sandpaper.
3. Apply rubbing compound
Apply a small amount of rubbing compound to the sanded area and rub it in with a clean cloth. This will help to remove any remaining scratches or imperfections.
4. Apply scratch filler
If the scratch is deep, you may need to apply scratch filler. Apply the filler to the scratch using a putty knife and allow it to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once the filler is dry, sand it down smooth with 400-grit sandpaper.
5. Apply primer
Once the scratch is filled and sanded, apply a coat of primer to the area. Primer will help to protect the metal from rust and corrosion, and it will also help the paint to adhere better. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
6. Apply automotive paint
Once the primer is dry, apply a coat of automotive paint to the area. Use a light, even stroke and apply multiple coats, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.
7. Apply clear coat
Once the paint is dry, apply a coat of clear coat to the area. Clear coat will help to protect the paint from the elements and give it a glossy finish. Allow the clear coat to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
8. Wax the area
Once the clear coat is dry, apply a coat of wax to the area. Wax will help to protect the paint and give it a shine.
