Painting a Fiberglass Car Body

Materials

  • Fiberglass car body
  • Automotive primer
  • Automotive paint
  • Automotive clear coat
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Tack cloths
  • Masking tape
  • Paint roller
  • Paint brush
  • Spray gun
  • Air compressor
  • Safety glasses
  • Dust mask

Preparation

  1. Clean the fiberglass car body thoroughly with soap and water. Remove any dirt, grease, or oil.
  2. Sand the fiberglass car body with 180-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface. Remove any dust from the sanding process with a tack cloth.
  3. Apply a coat of automotive primer to the fiberglass car body. Allow the primer to dry completely.
  4. Sand the primer with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface. Remove any dust from the sanding process with a tack cloth.

Painting

  1. Apply a coat of automotive paint to the fiberglass car body. Allow the paint to dry completely.
  2. Sand the paint with 400-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface. Remove any dust from the sanding process with a tack cloth.
  3. Apply a coat of automotive clear coat to the fiberglass car body. Allow the clear coat to dry completely.

Tips

  • Use a spray gun to apply the paint and clear coat for a smooth, even finish.
  • Wear safety glasses and a dust mask when sanding and painting.
  • Allow the paint and clear coat to dry completely before driving the car.
