1986 Lincoln Town Car Transmission Fluid Type
Automatic Transmission
The 1986 Lincoln Town Car with an automatic transmission uses Dexron II transmission fluid.
Capacity
- Without filter change: 12 quarts
- With filter change: 13 quarts
Manual Transmission
The 1986 Lincoln Town Car does not have a manual transmission option.
Checking Transmission Fluid Level
- Park the car on a level surface.
- Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
- Shift through all the gears, pausing in each gear for a few seconds.
- Return the transmission to Park.
- Pull out the transmission fluid dipstick and wipe it clean.
- Reinsert the dipstick into the transmission and pull it out again.
- The fluid level should be between the “HOT” and “COLD” marks on the dipstick.
Changing Transmission Fluid
- Gather the following materials:
- New transmission fluid (Dexron II)
- Transmission filter
- Transmission fluid pan gasket
- 13mm socket wrench
- 15mm socket wrench
- Funnel
- Drain pan
- Park the car on a level surface and let it cool down.
- Crawl under the car and locate the transmission fluid pan.
- Place the drain pan under the transmission fluid pan.
- Remove the bolts that hold the transmission fluid pan in place.
- Allow the transmission fluid to drain out into the drain pan.
- Once the transmission fluid has drained out, remove the transmission fluid pan.
- Replace the transmission filter.
- Replace the transmission fluid pan gasket.
- Reinstall the transmission fluid pan and tighten the bolts.
- Add new transmission fluid to the transmission through the dipstick tube.
- Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
- Shift through all the gears, pausing in each gear for a few seconds.
- Return the transmission to Park.
- Check the transmission fluid level and add more fluid if necessary.
Tips
- Change the transmission fluid and filter every 30,000 miles or as recommended in your owner’s manual.
- Use only Dexron II transmission fluid.
- If the transmission fluid is dark or smells burnt, it may be time to have the transmission serviced.
