1999 Lincoln Town Car Transmission Fluid Change
Tools and Materials
- New transmission fluid (Mercon V)
- Transmission filter
- Transmission pan gasket
- 13mm socket wrench
- 17mm socket wrench
- 8mm socket wrench
- Funnel
- Drain pan
Procedure
- Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Locate the transmission pan under the vehicle. It is a rectangular pan with a drain plug in the center.
- Place the drain pan under the transmission pan.
- Use the 13mm socket wrench to loosen the drain plug.
- Allow the transmission fluid to drain into the drain pan.
- Once the transmission fluid has drained, use the 17mm socket wrench to remove the transmission pan bolts.
- Carefully remove the transmission pan and gasket.
- Inspect the transmission pan and gasket for wear or damage. If either is damaged, replace it.
- Install the new transmission filter into the transmission pan.
- Install the new transmission pan gasket onto the transmission pan.
- Position the transmission pan on the transmission and tighten the bolts using the 17mm socket wrench.
- Tighten the drain plug using the 13mm socket wrench.
- Add new transmission fluid to the transmission through the dipstick tube. Use the funnel to avoid spills.
- Check the transmission fluid level using the dipstick. The fluid level should be between the “full” and “add” marks on the dipstick.
- Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
- Shift the transmission through all gears, pausing for a few seconds in each gear.
- Check the transmission fluid level again. Add more fluid as needed.
Tips
- Change the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles or as recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.
- Use the correct type of transmission fluid specified in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
- Dispose of the old transmission fluid properly.
- If you are not comfortable changing the transmission fluid yourself, you can take your vehicle to a mechanic.
Safety Precautions
- Wear safety glasses and gloves when working on your vehicle.
- Allow the transmission fluid to cool before draining it.
- Do not smoke or use open flames near the vehicle.
- Keep the vehicle out of reach of children and pets.
