Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)

The 2008 Town Car uses a Mercon V ATF. This fluid is specifically designed for use in Ford vehicles with automatic transmissions. It is important to use the correct type of ATF in your vehicle, as using the wrong type can damage the transmission.

Checking the Transmission Fluid Level

To check the transmission fluid level, you will need to:

1. Start the vehicle and let it idle for a few minutes.
2. Shift the transmission through all of the gears, pausing for a few seconds in each gear.
3. Park the vehicle and set the parking brake.
4. Pop the hood and locate the transmission fluid dipstick.
5. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag.
6. Reinsert the dipstick fully into the transmission.
7. Pull the dipstick out again and check the fluid level.

The fluid level should be between the “HOT” and “COLD” marks on the dipstick.

Changing the Transmission Fluid

The transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes first. To change the transmission fluid, you will need to:

1. Gather the following materials:
   • New Mercon V ATF
   • New transmission filter
   • Transmission fluid pan gasket
   • Socket wrench
   • Funnel
2. Drain the old transmission fluid by removing the drain plug from the bottom of the transmission pan.
3. Replace the transmission filter.
4. Install a new transmission fluid pan gasket.
5. Reinstall the transmission pan.
6. Add the new transmission fluid to the transmission through the dipstick tube.
7. Check the transmission fluid level and add more fluid as needed.

Tips

• If you are not comfortable changing the transmission fluid yourself, you can have it done by a mechanic.
• Be sure to check the transmission fluid level regularly, especially if you are towing or driving in heavy traffic.
• Never add the wrong type of fluid to your transmission. This can damage the transmission.
