What is an A body car?
The A body car was developed in the early 1960s by General Motors as a sporty, mid-sized car. It was designed to replace the Chevrolet Corvair and Pontiac Tempest, which were becoming outdated. The A body was also used by Buick and Oldsmobile for their Skylark models. The car was offered in 2 and 4-door sedan, coupe, and convertible body styles.
First generation (1964-1967)
The first-generation A body car was available in two wheelbases: a 115-inch wheelbase for the 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan, and a 119-inch wheelbase for the convertible. The car was powered by a variety of engines, including a 230-cubic inch inline-6, a 283-cubic inch V8, a 327-cubic inch V8, and a 409-cubic inch V8. The car was offered with a choice of a 3-speed manual transmission, a 4-speed manual transmission, or a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission.
Chevrolet Chevelle
The Chevrolet Chevelle was one of the most popular A body cars. The car was available in a variety of trims, including the base 300 Deluxe, the mid-level Malibu, and the high-performance SS. The SS Chevelle was powered by a 396-cubic inch V8 engine and was available with a variety of performance options, including a 4-speed manual transmission, a Positraction rear axle, and a Hurst shifter.
Buick Skylark
