A Body GM Cars
History
The A body was a General Motors automobile platform used from 1928 to 1958. It was the first GM platform to be used by multiple divisions, and it spawned some of the most iconic cars in American history, including the Chevrolet Bel Air, Pontiac Catalina, and Buick Century.
The A body was introduced in 1928 as the platform for the Chevrolet Model A. It was a rear-wheel-drive platform with a solid front axle and a leaf spring rear suspension. The platform was quickly adopted by other GM divisions, including Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Buick.
The A body underwent several redesigns over the years. The most significant redesign came in 1949, when the platform was redesigned to accommodate a new V8 engine. The platform was also lengthened in 1954 to accommodate a longer wheelbase.
The A body was discontinued in 1958 after being replaced by the GM B body platform. However, the A body’s legacy lives on in the many classic cars that were built on it.
