What You’ll Need
- Clean rag or paper towels
- Transmission fluid dipstick
Safety First
- Park the car on a level surface.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool down for several minutes.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Locate the Transmission Dipstick
The transmission dipstick is usually located on the passenger side of the engine, near the back of the engine. It will have a red or yellow handle and may be labeled “Transmission Fluid” or “ATF.”
2. Remove the Dipstick
Pull the dipstick out of the dipstick tube. Be careful not to spill any transmission fluid.
3. Wipe the Dipstick Clean
Use a clean rag or paper towels to wipe the dipstick clean.
4. Reinsert the Dipstick
Reinsert the dipstick into the dipstick tube. Push the dipstick all the way down until it stops.
5. Pull the Dipstick Out Again
Pull the dipstick out of the dipstick tube again. The transmission fluid level should be between the “Full” and “Add” marks on the dipstick.
6. Add Transmission Fluid if Necessary
If the transmission fluid level is low, you will need to add transmission fluid. Use a funnel to add transmission fluid to the transmission fluid dipstick tube. Add transmission fluid until the level reaches the “Full” mark on the dipstick.
7. Reinstall the Dipstick
Reinstall the dipstick into the dipstick tube. Push the dipstick all the way down until it stops.
Tips
- Check the transmission fluid level regularly, especially if you are towing or driving in hilly areas.
- If the transmission fluid is dark or smells burnt, it may need to be changed.
- If you are not comfortable checking the transmission fluid level yourself, you can take your car to a mechanic to have it done.
Warnings
- Do not overfill the transmission fluid. This can cause transmission damage.
- Do not use the wrong type of transmission fluid. This can also cause transmission damage.
