Coast Guard Diver Pulls Body from Car Above Niagara Falls

Buffalo, NY – September 16, 2023

A Coast Guard diver on Friday pulled the body of a man from a car that was submerged in the Niagara River, just above Niagara Falls.

The man, identified as 32-year-old John Doe of Buffalo, was reported missing on Thursday after his car was seen going over the edge of the falls. The Coast Guard launched a search for Doe, and a diver was able to locate the car on Friday morning.

The diver attached a cable to the car, and it was then lifted out of the water by a crane. Doe’s body was found inside the car.

“This was a difficult and dangerous operation, but our diver was able to successfully recover the body of the victim,” said Coast Guard Captain James McPherson.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Eyewitness Accounts

Several witnesses saw Doe’s car go over the falls on Thursday afternoon. They said the car was traveling at a high speed and did not appear to be under control.

“I saw the car go over the edge of the falls, and it just disappeared,” said one witness, who did not want to be identified.

“It was horrible to watch,” said another witness, who also did not want to be identified.

Investigation Ongoing

The Coast Guard and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the crash. They are looking into the possibility that Doe may have committed suicide.

“We are still trying to determine what happened,” said Niagara County Sheriff Michael Filicetti.

“We are asking anyone who may have seen the crash to contact us.”
