- Wrench or socket set
- Funnel
- Transmission fluid (if needed)
Safety Precautions
- Park the car on a level surface.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool down before checking the fluid level.
- Wear gloves to protect your hands from hot fluid.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Locate the Transmission Dipstick
The transmission dipstick is usually located on the side of the transmission or on the back of the engine. It will have a red or orange handle and may be labeled “Transmission Fluid” or “ATF.” If you can’t find the dipstick, consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
2. Remove the Dipstick
Pull the dipstick out of the transmission. Be careful not to spill any fluid.
3. Wipe the Dipstick Clean
Use a rag or shop towel to wipe the dipstick clean.
4. Reinsert the Dipstick
Insert the dipstick back into the transmission. Make sure it is fully inserted.
5. Pull the Dipstick Out Again
Pull the dipstick out of the transmission again. The fluid level should be between the “Full” and “Add” marks on the dipstick.
6. Add Fluid if Necessary
If the fluid level is low, add fluid to the transmission using a funnel. Be careful not to overfill the transmission.
7. Reinstall the Dipstick
Insert the dipstick back into the transmission. Make sure it is fully inserted.
Tips
- Check the transmission fluid level regularly, especially if you are experiencing any transmission problems.
- Use the type of transmission fluid recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.
- If you are not comfortable checking the transmission fluid level yourself, you can have it done by a mechanic.
