How to Connect an Ignition Coil to a Car Body

An ignition coil is an essential component of a car’s ignition system. It amplifies the electrical current from the battery and sends it to the spark plugs, which create the spark that ignites the fuel.

In order for the ignition coil to function properly, it must be properly connected to the car body. The car body provides the ground for the electrical current, and without a solid ground, the ignition coil will not be able to function correctly.

Materials you will need:

– Ignition coil
– Car body
– Wire strippers
– Crimping tool
– Heat shrink tubing

Step 1: Identify the terminals on the ignition coil.

There will be two terminals on the ignition coil. One terminal will be labeled “+” and the other terminal will be labeled “-“. The “+” terminal is the positive terminal, and the “-” terminal is the negative terminal.

Step 2: Strip the wires on the ignition coil.

Use a wire stripper to strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires on the ignition coil.

Step 3: Crimp ring terminals to the wires.

Crimp ring terminals to the ends of the wires on the ignition coil. Ring terminals are small metal connectors that have a hole in the center. This hole will allow you to bolt the ring terminal to the car body.

Step 4: Bolt the ring terminals to the car body.

Bolt the ring terminals to the car body. The “+” terminal should be bolted to a clean, unpainted surface on the car body. The “-” terminal should be bolted to a ground point on the car body.

Step 5: Heat shrink the connections.

Use heat shrink tubing to insulate the connections between the ring terminals and the car body. Heat shrink tubing is a type of plastic tubing that shrinks when it is heated. This will help to protect the connections from the elements and prevent them from corroding.

Step 6: Test the ignition coil.

Once the ignition coil is connected to the car body, you can test it to make sure that it is working properly. Start the car engine and let it idle. If the engine is running smoothly, then the ignition coil is working properly.

Tips:

– Make sure that the connections between the ignition coil and the car body are tight. Loose connections can cause the ignition coil to malfunction.
– Use a wire brush to clean the surfaces of the car body where the ring terminals will be bolted. This will ensure a good electrical connection.
– Apply a thin layer of anti-seize compound to the threads of the ring terminal bolts. This will help to prevent the bolts from corroding.
