How to Test Automatic Transmission Fluid

1. Gather Your Materials

You’ll need a few things to test your automatic transmission fluid:

  • A clean rag
  • A white piece of paper
  • A flashlight

2. Park Your Car on a Level Surface

It’s important to test your transmission fluid on a level surface so that you get an accurate reading.

3. Start Your Car and Let it Idle

Start your car and let it idle for a few minutes so that the transmission fluid can warm up.

4. Locate the Transmission Dipstick

The transmission dipstick is usually located at the back of the engine. It’s usually red or orange in color.

5. Pull Out the Dipstick and Wipe It Clean

Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag.

6. Reinsert the Dipstick and Pull It Out Again

Reinsert the dipstick into the transmission and pull it out again. This time, there should be a thin film of transmission fluid on the dipstick.

7. Check the Fluid Level

The fluid level should be between the two marks on the dipstick. If it’s below the lower mark, you need to add more transmission fluid.

8. Check the Fluid Color

The transmission fluid should be red or pink in color. If it’s brown or black, it may be time to change the fluid.

9. Check the Fluid Smell

The transmission fluid should have a slight odor. If it smells burnt or bitter, it may be time to change the fluid.

10. Test the Fluid for Leaks

If you notice any leaks around the transmission pan or dipstick, you may need to have the transmission serviced.

Tips for Testing Automatic Transmission Fluid

  • It’s best to test your transmission fluid when the engine is warm, but not hot.
  • If you’re not sure how to find the transmission dipstick, consult your car’s owner’s manual.
  • Don’t overfill your transmission with fluid. Too much fluid can cause the transmission to slip.
  • If you have any questions about testing your transmission fluid, ask a qualified mechanic for help.
