Lincoln Town Car Transmission Fluid Type
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)
The Lincoln Town Car uses Mercon or Mercon V ATF. Mercon is a Ford specification for automatic transmission fluid. It is a low-viscosity, low-friction fluid that is designed to protect transmission components and improve shift quality. Mercon V is a newer, improved version of Mercon that is backward compatible with Mercon.
Checking the Transmission Fluid Level
The transmission fluid level should be checked regularly, especially if you are experiencing any transmission problems. To check the fluid level, follow these steps:
- Park the car on a level surface.
- Turn off the engine.
- Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. It is usually located near the back of the engine.
- Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag.
- Reinsert the dipstick into the transmission and pull it out again.
- Check the fluid level on the dipstick. The fluid level should be between the “FULL” and “ADD” marks.
Adding Transmission Fluid
If the transmission fluid level is low, you will need to add some fluid. To add fluid, follow these steps:
- Purchase the correct type of ATF for your Town Car.
- Locate the transmission fluid filler tube. It is usually located near the top of the transmission.
- Insert a funnel into the filler tube and add fluid until the level is between the “FULL” and “ADD” marks on the dipstick.
- Check the fluid level regularly and add fluid as needed.
Changing the Transmission Fluid
The transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, depending on your driving conditions. To change the fluid, follow these steps:
- Purchase the correct type of ATF for your Town Car.
- Locate the transmission fluid drain plug. It is usually located on the bottom of the transmission.
- Place a drain pan under the drain plug and open the plug.
- Allow the fluid to drain out completely.
- Close the drain plug and tighten it to the specified torque.
- Locate the transmission fluid filter. It is usually located near the transmission fluid pan.
- Remove the filter and replace it with a new one.
- Reinstall the transmission fluid pan and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
- Add new ATF until the level is between the “FULL” and “ADD” marks on the dipstick.
- Start the engine and run it for a few minutes.
- Check the fluid level again and add fluid as needed.
Transmission Fluid Problems
If you are experiencing any transmission problems, it is important to have the transmission fluid checked. Low fluid levels, dirty fluid, or the wrong type of fluid can all cause transmission problems. If you are not sure how to check the transmission fluid or change the transmission fluid, it is best to take your Town Car to a qualified mechanic.
