Safety Precautions
- Park the vehicle on a level surface.
- Set the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool before beginning work.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Remove the transmission fluid pan.
- Place the transmission fluid pan under the transmission.
- Remove the 15mm bolts that hold the transmission fluid pan in place.
- Lower the transmission fluid pan and allow the fluid to drain into the pan.
2. Disconnect the transmission lines.
- Locate the transmission lines at the front of the transmission.
- Use a 18mm socket to loosen the nuts that hold the transmission lines in place.
- Pull the transmission lines off of the transmission.
3. Remove the torque converter bolts.
- Locate the torque converter bolts at the back of the engine.
- Use a 22mm socket to loosen the torque converter bolts.
- Remove the torque converter bolts.
4. Remove the transmission mount.
- Locate the transmission mount at the bottom of the transmission.
- Use a 18mm socket to loosen the nuts that hold the transmission mount in place.
- Remove the transmission mount.
5. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Locate the electrical connectors at the side of the transmission.
- Use a small screwdriver to disconnect the electrical connectors.
6. Remove the transmission.
- Use a floor jack to support the transmission.
- Place a jack stand under the transmission for safety.
- Use a 24mm socket to remove the transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Carefully pull the transmission away from the engine.
7. Inspect the torque converter.
- Remove the torque converter from the transmission.
- Inspect the torque converter for damage.
- Replace the torque converter if it is damaged.
8. Install the new transmission.
- Place the new transmission in position.
- Install the transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Tighten the transmission-to-engine bolts to 25 ft-lbs.
9. Install the transmission mount.
- Place the transmission mount in position.
- Install the nuts that hold the transmission mount in place.
- Tighten the nuts to 18 ft-lbs.
10. Connect the electrical connectors.
- Connect the electrical connectors to the side of the transmission.
11. Install the torque converter bolts.
- Place the torque converter on the transmission.
- Install the torque converter bolts.
- Tighten the torque converter bolts to 25 ft-lbs.
12. Connect the transmission lines.
- Connect the transmission lines to the transmission.
- Tighten the nuts that hold the transmission lines in place to 18 ft-lbs.
13. Install the transmission fluid pan.
- Place the transmission fluid pan on the transmission.
- Install the 15mm bolts that hold the transmission fluid pan in place.
- Tighten the bolts to 10 ft-lbs.
14. Add transmission fluid.
- Add transmission fluid to the transmission.
- Check the transmission fluid level and add fluid as needed.
15. Test drive the vehicle.
- Test drive the vehicle to ensure that the transmission is working properly.
Tips
- If you are not comfortable removing the transmission yourself, you can have it done by a mechanic.
- Be sure to use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to the correct torque specifications.
