Tools Required
- 10mm socket
- 13mm socket
- 15mm socket
- 18mm socket

- 3/8-inch drive ratchet
- 3/8-inch drive torque wrench
- Floor jack
- Jack stands
- Drain pan
- Transmission fluid
- New transmission filter
- New transmission pan gasket
Safety Precautions
- Park the car on a level surface.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool before beginning work.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Drain the Transmission Fluid
- Place the drain pan under the transmission pan.
- Loosen the drain plug with the 13mm socket.
- Allow the transmission fluid to drain into the pan.
2. Remove the Transmission Pan
- Remove the bolts that secure the transmission pan with the 10mm socket.
- Carefully pry the transmission pan loose from the transmission.
- Remove the transmission pan gasket.
3. Remove the Valve Body
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the valve body.
- Remove the bolts that secure the valve body with the 10mm socket.
- Carefully pry the valve body loose from the transmission.
4. Remove the Transmission Filter
- Remove the bolts that secure the transmission filter with the 10mm socket.
- Pull the transmission filter out of the transmission.
5. Remove the Transmission Pump
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the transmission pump.
- Remove the bolts that secure the transmission pump with the 10mm socket.
- Carefully pry the transmission pump loose from the transmission.
6. Remove the Transmission Case
- Remove the bolts that secure the transmission case with the 15mm socket.
- Carefully pry the transmission case loose from the transmission.
7. Remove the Transmission Gearset
- Remove the bolts that secure the transmission gearset with the 22mm socket.
- Carefully lift the transmission gearset out of the transmission.
8. Reinstall the Transmission Gearset
- Carefully lower the transmission gearset into the transmission.
- Tighten the bolts that secure the transmission gearset with the 22mm socket.
9. Reinstall the Transmission Case
- Carefully lower the transmission case onto the transmission.
- Tighten the bolts that secure the transmission case with the 15mm socket.
10. Reinstall the Transmission Pump
- Carefully lower the transmission pump onto the transmission.
- Tighten the bolts that secure the transmission pump with the 10mm socket.
- Connect the electrical connector to the transmission pump.
11. Reinstall the Transmission Filter
- Insert the new transmission filter into the transmission.
- Tighten the bolts that secure the transmission filter with the 10mm socket.
12. Reinstall the Valve Body
- Carefully lower the valve body onto the transmission.
- Tighten the bolts that secure the valve body with the 10mm socket.
- Connect the electrical connectors to the valve body.
13. Reinstall the Transmission Pan
- Install the new transmission pan gasket.
- Carefully lower the transmission pan onto the transmission.
- Tighten the bolts that secure the transmission pan with the 10mm socket.
14. Refill the Transmission Fluid
- Add the recommended amount of transmission fluid to the transmission.
- Check the transmission fluid level and add more fluid as needed.
15. Test Drive the Vehicle
- Start the vehicle and allow the engine to idle.
- Shift the transmission into each gear and check for proper operation.
- Test drive the vehicle and check for any leaks or unusual noises.
Tips
- Use a Haynes or Chilton repair manual for specific instructions for your year and model of vehicle.
- Be careful not to overtighten the bolts.
