2005 Acura RL Car Starts Only After Wiggling Transmission
Problem:
My 2005 Acura RL will only start after I wiggle the transmission shifter.
Symptoms:
* Car will not start if the transmission shifter is not in the park position.
* Wiggling the transmission shifter will allow the car to start.
* No other symptoms are present.
Possible Causes:
* Faulty neutral safety switch
* Faulty ignition switch
* Loose or damaged wiring
* Problem with the transmission
Troubleshooting:
1. Check the neutral safety switch. The neutral safety switch is a safety device that prevents the car from starting if the transmission is not in the park or neutral position. A faulty neutral safety switch can cause the car to not start even if the transmission is in the park position. To test the neutral safety switch, disconnect the electrical connector from the switch and then try to start the car. If the car starts, then the neutral safety switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.
2. Check the ignition switch. The ignition switch is responsible for sending power to the starter motor. A faulty ignition switch can cause the car to not start or to start intermittently. To test the ignition switch, turn the key to the on position and then listen for a click. If you do not hear a click, then the ignition switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.
3. Check the wiring. Loose or damaged wiring can cause the car to not start or to start intermittently. Inspect the wiring harness for any loose or damaged connections. Repair or replace any damaged wiring as necessary.
4. Check the transmission. A problem with the transmission can also cause the car to not start. If you have checked the neutral safety switch, the ignition switch, and the wiring and the car still will not start, then you may have a problem with the transmission. You will need to take the car to a mechanic to have the transmission inspected.
Solution:
The solution to this problem will depend on the underlying cause. If the problem is caused by a faulty neutral safety switch, then the switch will need to be replaced. If the problem is caused by a faulty ignition switch, then the switch will need to be replaced. If the problem is caused by loose or damaged wiring, then the wiring will need to be repaired or replaced. If the problem is caused by a problem with the transmission, then the transmission will need to be repaired or replaced.
Prevention:
There is no sure way to prevent this problem from occurring. However, you can reduce the risk of the problem by having your car regularly serviced by a qualified mechanic.
Additional Information:
This problem is most common on 2005-2008 Acura RL models.
If you are experiencing this problem, it is important to have the car diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible. Driving a car with a faulty neutral safety switch or ignition switch can be dangerous.
