Tools Required

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • 22mm socket
  • 24mm socket
  • 3/8 inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8 inch drive extension
  • 3/8 inch drive universal joint
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Transmission jack
  • Fluid drain pan
  • New transmission filter
  • New transmission fluid

Safety Precautions

  • Park the vehicle on a level surface.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Allow the engine to cool down.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Drain the Transmission Fluid

  1. Place the fluid drain pan under the transmission.
  2. Locate the transmission fluid drain plug.
  3. Use a 15mm socket to loosen the drain plug.
  4. Allow the transmission fluid to drain into the pan.

2. Remove the Driveshaft

  1. Locate the driveshaft.
  2. Use a 13mm socket to remove the bolts that connect the driveshaft to the transmission.
  3. Use a 13mm socket to remove the bolts that connect the driveshaft to the differential.
  4. Carefully lower the driveshaft out of the vehicle.

3. Remove the Torque Converter Bolts

  1. Locate the torque converter bolts.
  2. Use a 22mm socket to loosen the torque converter bolts.
  3. Do not remove the torque converter bolts completely.

4. Remove the Transmission Mount Bolts

  1. Locate the transmission mount bolts.
  2. Use a 18mm socket to remove the transmission mount bolts.

5. Remove the Transmission

  1. Position the transmission jack under the transmission.
  2. Raise the transmission jack until it supports the weight of the transmission.
  3. Carefully slide the transmission out of the vehicle.

6. Install the New Transmission

  1. Carefully slide the new transmission into the vehicle.
  2. Lower the transmission jack until the transmission is fully seated.
  3. Install the transmission mount bolts.
  4. Tighten the transmission mount bolts to 70 ft-lbs.

7. Install the Torque Converter Bolts

  1. Install the torque converter bolts.
  2. Tighten the torque converter bolts to 45 ft-lbs.

8. Install the Driveshaft

  1. Install the driveshaft.
  2. Tighten the driveshaft bolts to 70 ft-lbs.

9. Add Transmission Fluid

  1. Add transmission fluid to the transmission.
  2. Check the transmission fluid level.
  3. Add more transmission fluid as needed.

10. Connect the Negative Battery Terminal

  1. Connect the negative battery terminal.

Tips

  • It is helpful to have a second person assist you when removing and installing the transmission.
  • Be careful not to damage the transmission or any of the surrounding components.
  • If you are not comfortable performing this repair, it is best to take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic.
