2010 Smart Car Transmission Fluid Checking

Step 1: Gather materials

You will need the following materials to check the transmission fluid in your 2010 Smart Car:

* A clean rag
* A funnel
* A quart of automatic transmission fluid (ATF)
* A 10mm wrench

Step 2: Locate the transmission dipstick

The transmission dipstick is located on the passenger side of the engine, near the firewall. It is a black plastic dipstick with a yellow handle.

Step 3: Remove the dipstick

Pull the dipstick out of the transmission. Wipe the dipstick clean with a rag.

Step 4: Insert the dipstick

Reinsert the dipstick into the transmission. Push the dipstick all the way in.

Step 5: Remove the dipstick

Pull the dipstick out of the transmission again. The fluid level should be between the two marks on the dipstick.

Step 6: Add fluid if necessary

If the fluid level is below the lower mark on the dipstick, add fluid. Use a funnel to add fluid to the transmission. Add fluid slowly, and check the level frequently.

Step 7: Reinsert the dipstick

Once the fluid level is between the two marks on the dipstick, reinsert the dipstick. Push the dipstick all the way in.

Step 8: Check for leaks

Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Check for leaks around the transmission. If you see any leaks, stop the engine and have the transmission inspected by a qualified mechanic.

Tips

* Check the transmission fluid level regularly, especially if you are towing or driving in hilly areas.
* Use only the type of ATF specified in your owner’s manual.
* If the transmission fluid is dark or smells burnt, it may need to be replaced.
* If you are not comfortable checking the transmission fluid level yourself, you can have it done by a qualified mechanic.
