Basic Car Body Parts
Exterior
- Hood: The hinged panel that covers the engine compartment.
- Trunk: The enclosed storage space at the rear of the vehicle.
- Doors: The panels that allow passengers to enter and exit the vehicle.
- Windows: The transparent panels that allow light to enter the vehicle and passengers to see out.
- Windshield: The large transparent panel at the front of the vehicle that provides the driver with a view of the road.
- Rear window: The large transparent panel at the rear of the vehicle that provides rear passengers with a view outside.
- Side windows: The transparent panels on the sides of the vehicle that allow passengers to see out.
- Roof: The upper part of the vehicle that covers the passenger compartment.
- Rear bumper: The protective bar at the rear of the vehicle that absorbs impact in the event of a collision.
- Front bumper: The protective bar at the front of the vehicle that absorbs impact in the event of a collision.
- Grille: The opening in the front of the vehicle that allows air to flow to the radiator.
- Headlights: The lights at the front of the vehicle that illuminate the road ahead.
- Taillights: The lights at the rear of the vehicle that indicate braking and turning.
- Turn signals: The lights on the sides of the vehicle that indicate the driver’s intention to turn.
- Mirrors: The reflective surfaces that allow the driver to see behind and to the sides of the vehicle.
- Wheels: The circular devices that allow the vehicle to move.
- Tires: The rubber covers that fit over the wheels and provide traction.
Interior
- Dashboard: The panel at the front of the vehicle that contains the controls and gauges.
- Steering wheel: The device that the driver uses to steer the vehicle.
- Seats: The cushions that provide seating for the driver and passengers.
- Seat belts: The straps that restrain the driver and passengers in the event of a collision.
- Airbags: The inflatable devices that deploy in the event of a collision to protect the driver and passengers.
- Floor mats: The mats that cover the floor of the vehicle to protect it from dirt and spills.
- Headliner: The material that covers the ceiling of the vehicle.
- Door panels: The panels that cover the inside of the doors.
- Console: The central area of the vehicle that often contains storage compartments and controls.
- Glove box: The compartment in the dashboard that is used to store small items.
- Trunk release lever: The lever that is used to open the trunk.
- Fuel door release lever: The lever that is used to open the fuel door.
- Hood release lever: The lever that is used to open the hood.
