What is a CVT?

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic transmission that provides a smooth, seamless shifting experience. Unlike traditional automatic transmissions, which have a set number of gears, a CVT uses a variable-diameter pulley system to change the gear ratio infinitely. This allows the CVT to always operate in the most efficient gear ratio for the current driving conditions, resulting in improved fuel economy and performance.

How does a CVT work?

CVTs use two variable-diameter pulleys, one connected to the engine and one connected to the transmission. A metal belt or chain wraps around the pulleys, and as the pulleys change diameter, the gear ratio changes. The ratio of the diameters of the pulleys determines the gear ratio.

When the engine speed is low, the input pulley is small and the output pulley is large, creating a low gear ratio. This allows the car to accelerate quickly from a stop. As the engine speed increases, the input pulley gets larger and the output pulley gets smaller, creating a higher gear ratio. This allows the car to maintain a higher speed without the engine revving too high.

Advantages of CVTs
