Car Stalls in Neutral Manual Transmission
Causes
There are a few possible causes for a car to stall in neutral with a manual transmission.
* Idle speed is too low. The idle speed is the speed at which the engine runs when it is not under load. If the idle speed is too low, the engine may not be able to keep running and will stall.
* Air leak in the intake system. An air leak in the intake system can cause the engine to run lean, which can lead to stalling.
* Fuel filter is clogged. A clogged fuel filter can restrict the flow of fuel to the engine, which can cause it to stall.
* Fuel pump is failing. A failing fuel pump may not be able to deliver enough fuel to the engine, which can cause it to stall.
* Electrical problem. An electrical problem can prevent the engine from getting the spark it needs to run, which can cause it to stall.
Diagnosis
To diagnose the cause of a car stalling in neutral with a manual transmission, you will need to perform a few tests.
* Check the idle speed. The idle speed should be between 600 and 800 RPM. If the idle speed is too low, you can adjust it by turning the idle speed screw on the throttle body.
* Check for air leaks in the intake system. You can do this by spraying carburetor cleaner around the intake manifold and listening for a change in engine speed. If you hear a change in engine speed, you have found an air leak.
* Check the fuel filter. The fuel filter should be replaced every 10,000 to 15,000 miles. If the fuel filter is clogged, you will need to replace it.
* Check the fuel pump. You can do this by measuring the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. The fuel pressure should be between 40 and 60 psi. If the fuel pressure is too low, you may need to replace the fuel pump.
* Check for electrical problems. You can do this by checking the spark plugs and wires. The spark plugs should be clean and properly gapped. The spark plug wires should be free of cracks or breaks.
Repair
Once you have diagnosed the cause of the problem, you can repair it.
* If the idle speed is too low, you can adjust it by turning the idle speed screw on the throttle body.
* If there is an air leak in the intake system, you can seal it with RTV sealant.
* If the fuel filter is clogged, you can replace it.
* If the fuel pump is failing, you can replace it.
* If there is an electrical problem, you can repair or replace the faulty component.
Prevention
There are a few things you can do to prevent your car from stalling in neutral with a manual transmission.
* Keep the idle speed adjusted properly.
* Check for air leaks in the intake system regularly.
* Replace the fuel filter every 10,000 to 15,000 miles.
* Have the fuel pump checked regularly.
* Check the spark plugs and wires regularly.
By following these tips, you can help prevent your car from stalling in neutral with a manual transmission.
