How to Put Manual Transmission Fluid in a Car
Materials Needed
- Manual transmission fluid
- Funnel
- Rag or shop towel
- Wrench (optional)
Safety First
- Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool down before starting work.
- Wear gloves to protect your hands from hot fluid.
Locating the Transmission Fill Plug
- Open the hood and locate the transmission fill plug. It is usually a 17mm bolt on the side of the transmission.
- If you have difficulty locating the fill plug, consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
Removing the Fill Plug
- Use a wrench to loosen the fill plug.
- Be careful not to drop the plug into the transmission.
Adding Fluid
- Insert the funnel into the fill hole.
- Slowly pour the manual transmission fluid into the funnel.
- Check the fluid level regularly using the dipstick.
Checking the Fluid Level
- Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag.
- Reinsert the dipstick and pull it out again.
- The fluid level should be between the “full” and “add” marks on the dipstick.
Replacing the Fill Plug
- Once the fluid level is correct, replace the fill plug.
- Tighten the plug securely using a wrench.

- Use the correct type of manual transmission fluid for your vehicle.
- Do not overfill the transmission.
- Check the fluid level regularly and top up as necessary.
