Jump Start a Car with Manual Transmission
If your car has a manual transmission, you’ll need to take a few extra steps to jump start it. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it:
1. Gather Your Materials
You’ll need the following items to jump start your car:
* A set of jumper cables
* Another car with a working battery
* A helper
2. Position the Cars
Park the two cars close together, but make sure they’re not touching. The front of the dead car should be facing the back of the working car.
3. Connect the Jumper Cables
Connect the red jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal on the dead battery. Then, connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal on the working battery.
Next, connect the black jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal on the working battery. Then, connect the other end of the black cable to a metal part on the frame of the dead car, away from the battery.
4. Start the Working Car
Start the engine of the working car and let it run for a few minutes. This will help to charge the dead battery.
5. Try to Start the Dead Car
Once the dead battery has been charged for a few minutes, try to start the engine of the dead car. If the engine starts, let it run for a few minutes to continue charging the battery.
6. Disconnect the Jumper Cables
Once the dead car is running, disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order that you connected them:
1. Disconnect the black cable from the metal part on the frame of the dead car.
2. Disconnect the black cable from the negative terminal on the working battery.
3. Disconnect the red cable from the positive terminal on the working battery.
4. Disconnect the red cable from the positive terminal on the dead battery.
7. Drive the Dead Car
Once the jumper cables have been disconnected, drive the dead car for at least 30 minutes to allow the battery to fully charge.
Tips
* If the dead battery is completely discharged, it may take several minutes for the working car to charge it enough to start the engine.
* If the engine doesn’t start after a few attempts, check the connections of the jumper cables to make sure they’re tight.
* If the engine still doesn’t start, there may be another problem with the car, such as a faulty starter or alternator.
Warnings
* Never connect the jumper cables to the battery terminals on the same car. This can cause a spark that could ignite the battery and cause an explosion.
* Never smoke or use a lighter near the battery, as this could also cause an explosion.
* Be careful not to touch the metal parts of the jumper cables while they are connected to the battery terminals, as this could result in an electrical shock.
