Jump Starting a Manual Transmission Car

Jump Starting a Manual Transmission Car

If your manual transmission car has a dead battery, you can jump start it using another vehicle. Here are the steps on how to do it:

Safety First

Before you start, make sure that both vehicles are parked in a safe location and that the parking brakes are engaged. Also, turn off the engines of both vehicles and put the gear selector of the dead car in neutral.

Connect the Jumper Cables

Now, connect the jumper cables in the following order:

  1. Connect one end of the red (positive) jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
  2. Connect the other end of the red jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the good battery.
  3. Connect one end of the black (negative) jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the good battery.
  4. Connect the other end of the black jumper cable to an unpainted metal surface on the engine or frame of the dead car.

Do not connect the black jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the dead battery, as this could cause a spark and explosion.

Start the Good Car

Once the jumper cables are connected, start the engine of the good car and let it run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery.

Try to Start the Dead Car

Now, try to start the dead car. If it starts, let it run for a few minutes to charge the battery further. If it does not start, check the connections of the jumper cables and make sure that they are tight. You may also try wiggling the cables to see if that helps.

Disconnect the Jumper Cables

Once the dead car is running, disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order that you connected them:

  1. Disconnect the black jumper cable from the unpainted metal surface on the engine or frame of the dead car.
  2. Disconnect the black jumper cable from the negative (-) terminal of the good battery.
  3. Disconnect the red jumper cable from the positive (+) terminal of the good battery.
  4. Disconnect the red jumper cable from the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.

Cautions

Here are a few cautions to keep in mind when jump starting a manual transmission car:

  • Never attempt to jump start a car with a dead alternator, as this could damage the good battery.
  • Do not connect the jumper cables to any other parts of the vehicle, such as the starter or the fuel pump.
  • If the dead car does not start after a few attempts, do not continue trying to start it. This could damage the starter or the battery.
