Interventions
- Provide the patient with information about colostomy surgery and the care of a stoma.
- Encourage the patient to talk about their feelings about their body.
- Help the patient to develop coping mechanisms for dealing with negative feelings about their body.
- Refer the patient to a support group for people with colostomies.
- Provide the patient with opportunities to interact with other people who have colostomies.
- Encourage the patient to participate in activities that make them feel good about themselves.
- Help the patient to find ways to camouflage their stoma, if desired.
Evaluation
The patient will be evaluated on their ability to:
- Express positive feelings about their body.
- Look at and touch their stoma without difficulty.
- Participate in social activities.
- Accept their new body image.
The patient’s progress will be documented in their medical record.
