What is Transmission?

How Transmissions Work

Transmissions work by using a series of gears to transfer power from the engine to the wheels. The gears are engaged and disengaged by the driver, which alters the speed and torque of the vehicle.

Manual Transmissions

Manual transmissions use a clutch to engage and disengage the gears. The clutch is a friction device that connects the engine to the transmission. When the clutch is disengaged, the engine is disconnected from the transmission and power cannot be transferred to the wheels.

Automatic Transmissions

Automatic transmissions use a torque converter to engage and disengage the gears. The torque converter is a fluid coupling that connects the engine to the transmission. When the engine speed is high, the torque converter locks up and power can be transferred to the wheels. When the engine speed is low, the torque converter slips and power cannot be transferred to the wheels.
