Where Do I Add Transmission Fluid in My Car?
Step 1: Locate the Transmission Dipstick
The transmission dipstick is typically located on the driver’s side of the engine, near the firewall. It may be red, yellow, or orange in color, and it will have a handle on the top. If you can’t find the dipstick, consult your owner’s manual for help.
Step 2: Remove the Dipstick and Check the Fluid Level
Pull the dipstick out of the transmission and wipe it clean with a rag. Reinsert the dipstick all the way into the transmission, then pull it out again. The fluid level should be between the two marks on the dipstick. If the fluid level is low, you need to add more fluid.
Step 3: Add Transmission Fluid
Use a funnel to add transmission fluid to the transmission. Add fluid slowly, and check the level frequently. Don’t overfill the transmission, or you could damage it.
Step 4: Reinstall the Dipstick
Once you’ve added enough fluid, reinstall the dipstick. Make sure it’s fully inserted into the transmission.
Step 5: Check for Leaks
After you’ve added fluid, start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Check for any leaks under the car. If you see any leaks, you need to fix them before driving the car.
Tips
- Check the transmission fluid level regularly, especially if you’re driving in stop-and-go traffic or towing a trailer.
- Change the transmission fluid and filter every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, or as recommended by your owner’s manual.
- Use the correct type of transmission fluid for your car. Consult your owner’s manual for the recommended fluid type.
Warning
Do not overfill the transmission. If the fluid level is too high, it can cause the transmission to overheat and fail.
