Where Do I Put Transmission Fluid in My Car?

Step 1: Locate the Transmission Dipstick

The transmission dipstick is usually located in the engine compartment, near the back of the engine. It will have a red or orange handle and will be labeled “Transmission.” Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag.

Step 2: Check the Fluid Level

Reinsert the dipstick into the transmission and pull it out again. The fluid level should be between the two marks on the dipstick. If the fluid is low, you will need to add more.

Step 3: Add Transmission Fluid

Use a funnel to add transmission fluid to the transmission. Do not overfill the transmission, as this can damage the transmission. The fluid level should be between the two marks on the dipstick.

Step 4: Check the Fluid Level Again

Reinsert the dipstick into the transmission and pull it out again. The fluid level should now be between the two marks on the dipstick. If the fluid level is still low, you may need to add more fluid.

Step 5: Replace the Dipstick

Once the fluid level is correct, replace the dipstick in the transmission. Make sure that the dipstick is fully inserted into the transmission.

Tips

  • Check the transmission fluid level regularly, especially if you are experiencing any transmission problems.
  • Do not overfill the transmission, as this can damage the transmission.
  • If you are not comfortable adding transmission fluid yourself, you can take your car to a mechanic to have it done.

Warnings

  • Transmission fluid is a flammable liquid. Keep it away from heat and open flames.
  • Do not get transmission fluid on your skin or in your eyes. If you do, rinse the area with water immediately.
