What is Transmission Oil?

How to Add Transmission Oil
To add transmission oil, you will need a funnel and a quart of transmission oil. Follow these steps:
- Locate the transmission fill plug.
- Remove the fill plug bolt.
- Insert the funnel into the fill hole.
- Pour the transmission oil into the funnel.
- Screw the fill plug bolt back into the fill hole.
- Check the transmission oil level.
How to Check the Transmission Oil Level
To check the transmission oil level, you will need a dipstick. Follow these steps:
- Locate the transmission dipstick.
- Pull the dipstick out of the dipstick tube.
- Wipe the dipstick clean.
- Reinsert the dipstick into the dipstick tube.
- Pull the dipstick out of the dipstick tube again.
- Check the oil level on the dipstick.
The transmission oil level should be between the “Full” and “Add” marks on the dipstick.

- Use the type of transmission oil that is recommended in your car’s owner’s manual.
- Check the transmission oil level regularly, especially before long trips.

Warning
Do not overfill the transmission. Overfilling the transmission can cause the transmission to slip and overheat.
